42 | Cocktail Lounge: Architecture & Design (A&D)

20 February 2023

“When you enter 42, the new cocktail lounge in the heart of Mayfair (right beside Gymkhana, London, one of the city's flagship Indian restaurants), you enter a microcosm of mood lighting, plush couches, hidden away corners, and wall art fit for the corridors of a museum. The bar is a new offering with the aim to bring a bit of India’s elite club culture to the city. Delhi Gymkhana Club, historical palaces, ambassadorial homes, Bombay Gymkhana, Bangalore Club, form the myriad reference points for 42’s eclectic interiors.”

“The Sethi family homes across India were a further reference point for our design,” explains Samuel Hosker, design director of North End Design, who has been tasked with the interior storytelling of all JKS restaurants over the years. “A number of artworks and ornaments from their private residences are compiled in the lounge, including the carpet designs on the floor that were matched to carpets in Karam’s grandmothers’ home in Greater Kailash - II.” Speaking of looking closer to home, part of the inspiration also came from a wedding in the family. “The upstairs drawing room at Samode Mahal – where Karam’s brother Jyotin got married - was one of the earliest reference points,” explains Hosker of a smorgasbord aesthetic that surprises and delights. For example, the idea to have rugs as wallpaper was informed by a back-issue shoot of Vogue India featuring Mrs Ritu Kumar posing in front of a paisley wall-hanging as the backdrop. It’s a space that is playful and not too serious,” Hosker sums up.
